Housing Groups Keep Hopes Alive on Long Island

Slideshow
The Village of Rockville Center is working to preserve affordable housing.

Mention Long Island to a non-Islander and you'll likely evoke images of sprawling mansions and their "rich and famous" owners as they summer on the Hamptons. But for thousands of average working men and women, trying to raise a family on the rest of the Island, housing costs are rising beyond reach. They have learned the hard way why the Long Island housing market is rated among the costliest in the nation.

But if three well-established, indigenous housing groups - the Community Development Corporation of Long Island, the Long Island Housing Partnership and the Village of Rockville Centre Housing Authority - have their way, that is going to change.

Recently, Commissioner Deborah VanAmerongen and NYRO Assistant Commissioner, Greg Watson visited these groups and learned that there is reason for working families on Long Island to hope.

The tour proved to be an exciting and informative display of the variety of affordable housing options being created with DHCR's resources. These efforts have been instrumental in combating rising costs.

The Long Island Housing Partnership's efforts to making homeownership affordable for many years are highly impressive; CDC of Long Island is using innovative ways to create affordable rental options; and the Rockville Center Housing Authority's initiative to preserve and upgrade 153 units of public housing is remarkable.

In the struggle to make housing affordable on Long Island, these three outstanding groups have drawn a line in the sand.
